“We’re too small for HR” – common myths explained

When Ben started his business, there were just three employees.

As the company grew to eight, then twelve, HR wasn’t something he gave much thought to.

“We’re too small to need HR,” he would often say. “We’re like a family.”

Then one employee resigned unexpectedly. Another raised concerns about inconsistent treatment. Ben realised that, although his business had grown, the way he managed people hadn’t grown with it.

It’s a situation we see time and time again.

Many small business owners assume HR is something that’s only needed by larger organisations. In reality, some of the biggest HR challenges arise in smaller businesses, where there’s often less time, fewer resources and no dedicated HR team.

Let’s look at some of the most common myths.

Myth 1: “We’re too small to need HR.”

The reality is simple: if you employ people, you have HR responsibilities.

Whether you have two employees or two hundred, you’ll need employment contracts, clear expectations, fair processes and confidence in managing people issues.

Good HR isn’t about the size of your business – it’s about supporting the people who help your business succeed.

Myth 2: “We’ll deal with HR when a problem comes up.”

Many businesses only seek HR advice after an issue has escalated.

By that stage, relationships may already have broken down, formal procedures may be necessary and the options available can be more limited.

Seeking advice early often prevents small issues from becoming much bigger ones.

Myth 3: “We can just download a policy from the internet.”

Templates can be a useful starting point, but they rarely reflect the way your business actually operates.

Policies, contracts and procedures should support your organisation, your culture and the way you manage your people. Using documents that aren’t tailored to your business can create confusion and inconsistency when you need them most.

Myth 4: “HR is just paperwork.”

Good HR is about much more than contracts and policies.

It’s about helping managers have confident conversations, supporting employees, resolving issues fairly and creating a positive working environment where people can do their best work.

The paperwork is important, but it’s only one part of the picture.

Myth 5: “HR is too expensive for a small business.”

Many business owners worry about the cost of HR support.

In reality, the cost of getting things wrong can be far greater. Poorly managed employee issues can lead to lost productivity, higher staff turnover, lengthy disputes and, in some cases, expensive legal claims.

Accessing practical HR advice when you need it can save both time and money in the long run.
